Budget Bed & Breakfast?
To be honest when I decided to do a section on this site about accommodation in Oban & Argyll
I thought there's really nothing very exciting to write about hotels or bed and breakfast or any type
of accommodation, is there?
But, as we all know, getting the right hotel, campsite, caravan park, self catering or whatever can be
the making, or breaking, of a holiday or short break - get the right place and you'll have a great time,
get it wrong and you may as well go home after the first night.
There's a wide range of accommodation available ranging from cheap youth hostel rooms to exclusive £250
a night country house. I hope that this site will give you some extra information to help you settle on
one that best suits your needs.
Now if you're a guy and you get it wrong, your better half will hold you entirely responsible for the
ensuing disaster and if you're a gal that messes up it'll be his fault for not being more dominant and
taking care of it for you. (Who's nodding their head?).
Whatever, now is the time to get it right, so let's see if I can be of any help.
Once you've decided on the budget for your accommodation whether it's camping, chalet, caravan, b&b, hotel,
country house or castle, you have to decide:-
Town or country?
Entirely up to you and your personal preferences but one thing to consider is that public transport is
not the best, especially in the evening and practically non-existent late on at night, so if you plan on
regular evening visits to town, eating out and perhaps a couple of drinks then I would suggest that
you either designate a driver or budget for taxis.
Many, if not most, of the out of town accommodations provide high quality evening meals and you may enjoy
the rural peace after a busy day exploring.
In Oban,
most of the town is within a £6 - £10 taxi fare but the two main caravan & campsites to the south
of town (Oban Divers & Oban Camping & Caravan Site) will cost around £11. The two sites to the north
(North Ledaig & Tralee) will cost around £16& £19 respectively and the two chalet parks, Coligin and
Lagnakeil will cost around £12 & £14 respectively. Certainly worth budgeting for if you plan on eating in
town every night. (These prices were correct August 2007 - check yourself to be sure)
Getting a taxi around 2am which is pub & club closing time is all but impossible from the taxi rank,
especially at weekends, so the best plan here is to go stand in a doorway somewhere and phone the taxi to
come collect you!
(Local taxis don't charge extra for collecting.)
