Argyll Castles ~ ~ time to go exploring

Throughout Argyll, castles appear to dominate the landscape. Your first thought may be that of a valiant struggle against rampaging hordes of Englishmen or Vikings, defending the Scotland flag fluttering overhead but in reality many a time it was clan warfare and even inter clan squabbles, more to do with money and power than patriotism. As usual with armed conflicts of any nature it was the poor peasant who suffered and not the rich landowners.

Scotland has had an unsettled and violent past and there are estimated to be in excess of 3000 castles - some still standing, others little more than foundations - mainly in the Highlands & Borders areas.

This section will give you a taste of fortifications in Argyll, the Lands of Lorn and a little bit of history. Where possible there'll be pictures of the castles and coming soon is a section on the clans of scotland so keep checking back.
