Monthly Mutterings (Oban & Argyll) Issue 6 May 2008

You bunch of puddins!!

Had a few emails after the last newsletter (Keep 'em coming, I love feedback - tell me what you want) asking for more information on haggis.

I'm sure all of you [except Harold perhaps ;-)] realised that the The Great Haggis Hunt was a bit of fun ......

I've added two haggis pages, serious stuff this time, - Haggis recipes and ingredients - and another with the Selkirk Grace & Address to a Haggis by Rabbie Burns.

Whooohooo -- a new page where you can search the site or the web and it's powered by Google. Why leave the site when it's all there for you? Site & Google web search

Castles, castles, castlesI also had a request for some information on castles in the area so started another new section Castles in Argyll which at the moment has info on Dunollie, Dunstaffnage, Stalker, Inveraray and Kilchurn Castles listed with more on the way. There are dozens of castles around Argyll, some restored to a high standard and lived and others little more than a hint of foundations with a few boulders scattered around. I'll add the more popular ones to the site soon as possible.

What's happenning out and about

  • Roadworks! Every where I've been this month there's been roadworks. A usual 1 hour trip to Fort William last week was nearly 2 hours. According to the local press all the major roadworks will be stopped soon for the summer season and resumed in October, YAY!

  • A little lull as usual after the Easter buzz but visitor numbers are slowly creeping up. This weekend - May bank holiday - should see a bit of life about the area. A couple of friends with guest houses tell me they're almost fully booked.

  • A proposed new nightclub in Stevenson Street in Oban has the NIMBYs (Not In My Back Yard) out in droves but I feel it will go ahead anyways.

  • The area around Ganavan Beach is being developed with the pavilion demolished and luxury houses being built in their place. (I reckon I'd sell my soul for a house in this particular spot!). Access to the beach or chalets behind is not restricted, it just isn't the most pleasing sight.

  • In addition to the sea-plane service between Glasgow and Oban a new route has been opened by the same company between Glasgow and Mull. Apparently there are bookings for months ahead.
  • Weatherwise? Started the month with a journey to Perth and encountered rain, sleet, hail and a thunderstorm! Two days later a planned trip to Islay was cancelled due to gale force winds. Mid month started to calm down and although there's a little cold snap in the air at night there have been some glorious sunny days - with many more to come I hope!

If you'd like more information on any thing in this newsletter or on the site please feel free to get in touch.
