Oban Whisky Distillery
The company changed owners in 1866 and again in 1883 when it was acquired by Walter Higgin. He decided to expand the warehouses to the rear which led to the discovery of MacArthurs Cave, an important archeological find dating human habitation of the area back to 4500BC. The production of whiskey doesn't go back quite as far that, but Oban can boast that it is one of the oldest sources in the world of fine single malt whisky, with the water being sourced from two local lochs in Ardconnel area.
The Tour The knowledgeable guides (That's a fiver you owe me guys...) escort a small group on the hour long tour and explain how the three ingredients (Barley, water & yeast) go through the six stage process to produce this outstanding whisky.
The adult
admission price is refundable in the shop but check for details.
All things considered a short but enjoyable tour and one to fit in with a few other short ones to make a day or to fill a vacant couple of hours.
The distillery is closed to tours in January, generally opened mornings in February, November
& December and all day the rest of the time.
