~ A Vist to Oban and Lorn ~
Steves' First Family Holiday in Oban and Surrounding Area

Up until August this year (2010) I had never visited the West Coast of Scotland. I have visited Moray, and Dumfries and Galloway in the past, and have always loved Scotland. With my visit to the Oban area, my appreciation for Scotland has been raised to a new level, and I will be visiting the area again.

I arrived at the caravan site at North Ledaig, a few miles North of Oban, over the stunning bridge at the Falls of Lora. The first thing I noticed setting up the caravan was the view over Ardmurcknish Bay towards the Isles of Lismore and Mull. The second thing I noticed was the calm sea and overall sense of peace I experienced. Once I had set up and grabbed a bite to eat at one of the excellent restaurants you can find in Oban, I sat and watched the sun sink slowly behind the Isles from the window of my caravan.

I knew I had been very fortunate in selecting this area for my annual holiday. There is plenty to do in the area; I won't try and list everything, since it depends on your hobbies and interest, but kayaking and fishing on the peaceful lochs, bays and seas in the area were very popular. However, I was on a family holiday with 2 young children and there was plenty to do.

There are excellent beaches all around the area, from sandy beaches to swim and build sandcastles, to rocky areas with plenty to find in the rock pools. A visit to the Sea Life Sanctuary near Barcaldine, Loch Creran is a great family day out, but make sure you wander down to the shoreline there, as there are some great views.

A trip to the Isles, from the ferry port at Oban is a must do. The views of Lismore Lighthouse from the ferry are excellent, on the way over to the Isle of Mull. For the younger children, Tobermory on the Isle of Mull is where Balamory is filmed. Don't let that put you off the town if you don't have children thought. The views are stunning, and the local malt is worth sampling.

I hope I have given you a small flavour of the Oban area, and if you have never been I urge you to visit. You will not be disappointed. The stunning mixture of seascapes and mountains, fantastic sunsets, great food, castles and Whisky blends together to ensure you will leave relaxed and refreshed.

I hope to see you there sometime, Steve.
